The Rhode Island Clean Slate Bill

Senator Andrew Dimitri and Representative Julie Casimiro have introduced the the Clean Slate RI Bill. This legislation would automate the expungement process for people that already qualify according to law, helping 77,000 Rhode Islanders still held back by old records.

Expanding Expungement Opportunities

Clean Slate Rhode Island is also supporting other critical pieces of legislation which would expand expungement opportunities to people with old criminal records that deserve second chances. In Rhode Island, waiting periods for expungement are extremely long — it can take twenty years for someone to have the opportunity for a second chance.

The Clean Slate RI Campaign is supporting legislation that would make this system fairer and reduce the wait times for people that are keeping their records clean but are still held back by their past. This includes the following bills:

These bills would allow people with multiple non-violent felonies access to expungement:

7204 sponsored by Representative Lombardi:
2299 sponsored by Senator Ana Quezada

These bills would reduce the number of years people seeking to expunge their misdemeanor records have to wait:

7281 sponsored by Representative Cherie Cruz
2313 sponsored by Senator Ana Quezada
